Kramptopus
Original Mixed Media: Kramptopus (12x18)
This piece reinterprets Krampus as a deep-sea entity, drawing on the primal fear of the deep ocean. The composition subverts traditional folklore features: the horns are fleshy tentacles, while the mass of tentacles surrounding the face are actually elongated tongues. It is a viscerally gross exploration of two different types of ancient terror.
The work is executed on a solid wood slab using pyrography for the line work and background textures. Layered watercolor and wood stain provide the murky, organic tones of a deep-water specimen.
